Description

A raised component under the rear of the shoe, consisting of any of a wide variety of shapes, heights, styles and materials. The raised heel has origins dating back at least 3,000 years and was used in a utility manner to prevent the feet of horsemen from slipping out of the stirrup, and also to increase the wearer's stature and status. The modern high heel (two or more inches in height) dates back to the 16th century and has evolved into a primary fashion feature in a shoe, but also has retained its original purpose of increasing stature and status.
